La Nouvelle Ronde: A Haitian History blog, a space dedicated to discussions on Haiti’s history. Since December 2024.
We chose to name this blog La Nouvelle Ronde in homage to the eponymous revue founded in Haiti in 1925, which ran until 1927, at the height of the American occupation (1915–1934). Following La Ronde, which had shaped the literary landscape in the early 20th century, La Nouvelle Ronde reflects a transitional period where young Haitian intellectuals reaffirmed their cultural identity in the face of imperialism, while debating the country’s future.
Often overlooked compared to La Revue indigène (1927) – frequently highlighted as the key symbol of Haitian cultural creation during the occupation – La Nouvelle Ronde nonetheless embodies the fervent desire of a youthful generation to understand the issues of their time. It captures a Haiti in search of its voice amid foreign domination, while deeply reflecting on its historical and literary heritage.
Through this blog, we hope to position our work within this intellectual lineage: revisiting Haiti’s history by exploring the many dimensions of its critical and cultural thought, while interrogating key issues of memory, identity, resistance, and contemporary realities. La Nouvelle Ronde, like the revue that inspired it, aims to be a space for exchange and reflection, at the intersection of history, politics, and the humanities.
