Hommage à Frankétienne : Un géant de la littérature haïtienne s’éteint

Comme beaucoup, nous avons appris hier la disparation poète, écrivain et figure emblématique de la littérature haïtienne Frankétienne. Né le 12 avril 1936 dans le Nord d’Haïti, sa plume, empreinte de passion et d’engagement ont marqué des générations de lecteurs, tant en Haïti qu’à travers le monde.

Frankétienne a débuté sa carrière littéraire dans les années 1960 et a rapidement gagné une renommée nationale et internationale. Son œuvre phare, Dézafi (1975), est considérée comme l’un des chefs-d’œuvre de la littérature haïtienne contemporaine. Ce roman, écrit en créole, plonge dans les complexités de la culture haïtienne tout en mêlant mythes, réalités sociales et politiques. 

Frankétienne a su allier la parole et les arts (car il était aussi peintre!) à la profondeur des réalités haïtiennes naviguant entre tradition et modernité. Il a également joué un rôle clé dans la renaissance du créole comme langue littéraire, une démarche qui reste cruciale pour l’identité linguistique et culturelle du pays.

Tout au long de sa carrière, Frankétienne a continué d’être un fervent défenseur de la culture haïtienne, soutenant la richesse et la diversité des voix haïtiennes dans ses œuvres et dans son engagement public. Sa contribution à la littérature haïtienne, tout comme son influence sur les générations d’écrivains qui ont suivi, demeure incontournable.

Like many, we learned yesterday of the passing of Frankétienne, poet, writer, and an iconic figure in Haitian literature. Born on April 12, 1936, in northern Haiti, his writing, filled with passion and commitment, left a lasting impact on generations of readers, both in Haiti and around the world.

Frankétienne began his literary career in the 1960s and quickly gained national and international acclaim. His landmark work, Dézafi (1975), is regarded as one of the masterpieces of contemporary Haitian literature. Written in Creole, this novel delves into the complexities of Haitian culture while blending myth, social realities, and politics.

Frankétienne masterfully combined the art of storytelling and the visual arts (he was also a painter!) to convey the depth of Haitian realities, navigating between tradition and modernity. He also played a key role in the renaissance of Creole as a literary language, an essential movement for the linguistic and cultural identity of the country.

Throughout his career, Frankétienne remained a passionate advocate for Haitian culture, supporting the richness and diversity of Haitian voices in both his work and public engagement.
